Description of the "Thoughts Library"
Guided Imagery
Process
This process can assist you in learning to control wandering
stressful, distracting thoughts by having you exchange these
thoughts for more relaxing/peaceful ones. In this process you
will visualize yourself in a library full of various books. You will
select a book off the shelf and put away any unwanted thoughts
in a book with vinyl see-through pages. Then you will open up
another imaginary book to experience a peaceful/relaxing
ocean scene.
Why is it important to control your distracting
thoughts
For many people, we can find ourselves getting caught up in
negative thinking, worrying, stewing over a situation, getting
disappointed in our expectations, and find our mind keeping
us up at nights with too many distracting thoughts. When we
have distracting thoughts, we are in some way "out of control".
We can feel lost or overwhelmed by our thoughts. Over time
our distracting thoughts can cause us to get sick, it can create
dis-ease, weight gain, feed addictive behaviors, and even
cause insomnia.
Some people can find distracting thoughts as productive, yet
I tend to disagree. The problem isn't that you don't have good
ideas when it comes to distracting thoughts. The problem is
that you want the assurance that they're going to work out. But
nobody gets that assurance. You have to be willing to take the
risk.
When you are stuck and life has you by the heels, can ask
yourself this question, "What do you know for sure? Will you
let other people define you, or do you have enough courage
to search yourself and act on your own truth?" The bottom line
is to focus on what's true for you. Examine your intentions and
tell yourself what you believe and want. Stand up, step out, and
act on that truth.
The benefits of being able to control your distracting and wandering
thoughts are:
- Peace of mind
- Less stress
- Sleep better at night
- Having a sense of relief
- A sense of control over your life
- Less negative thinking and doubts
- Making peace with your situation
